Post Xmas Status Update

What a difference a week makes, and especially when there's a heat wave. With lots of pre-Christmas harvesting, and the loss of a fair bit of the raspberry crop to sunburn from the previous weekend, our regular Boxing Day crowd of berry enthusiasts had their work cut out filling their buckets. Some did better than others, with the early birds able to get a few blueberries too. So, for those yet to come down to the farm, the not-so-good news is that the early season summer berries have come and gone, with raspberries of all colours nearly finished, as too for youngs, boysens, gooseberries and currants.

Our strawberries have been a non-event this year, so far, but may redeem themselves over the later summer season coinciding with the main blackberry crop -which does look promising, having been successfully covered with shadecloth ahead of the  heat wave.  Look out for a further post when they become plentiful.

Also hoping the apples, which have set well and had a very clean start to their growing phase ( due to the dry spring)  may provide for some good U-pick activity from March until after Easter. Its the proverbial swings and roundabouts of farming!

Pre-Xmas berries, and a new website

Hey there-

We've got the website revised and set up for hand-held devices -at last! And the berries kicked off early, so they are a little ahead of our news update. Lots of raspberries in all colours, currants and various shades of blackberries. Raspberries will finish early in January so don't leave it too late

Not so many strawberries this year, and as per last year, blueberries have special conditions for U-pick harvest -not every day, and only when directed by our team, so they get a chance to get ripe.

Berry Season has Started

It has been a very hot and dry spring and usually at this time of the year we are hoping the rain would stop. Instead we are now praying for rain! The impact of the hot spring is that it is shaping up to be an early berry season. At the moment we have a good supply of red raspberries, loganberries, youngberries, blackberries, gooseberries and red currants. By mid December all the berries should be available (except strawberries and blue berries). Strawberries have been a sad story this year. We needed to renovate and replant our strawberry patch last autumn. Phil began preparing the new rows in May. The rain started in June and it didn't stop raining long enough for the soil to dry out to finalise the ploughing until September. Then the rain stopped completely and it was too hot and dry to plant the strawberries or those we did plant died in the October heat. Hence a very sad strawberry patch, which is now ready for replanting next autumn. So for this summer there will be very few strawberries available. As usual we only have a small patch of blueberries and high demand so it is pot luck whether there are any ready for picking on the day you visit. We will email you again when peak berry season has begun and the berries are in excellent supply.
